Week 9 - Response to Content

John Hartley's political theory that we are 'citezens of the media' is evident with the success of tv shows such as Big Brother, X Factor, Australian Idol and Australia's Got Talent.  These shows prove that people are still comitted to democracy because the shows ask viewers to participate and vote for their favourite personalities.  Despite the developed lack of interest in political news programs and the growing ignorance of politics in general, Hartley's theory demonstrates that the Australian community does still support the democratic system that runs the country.

A recent development in the last twenty years shows democracy works best when there is maximum debate (Stockwell, S 2011).  This finding demonstrates some cosmopolitanism because although there are so many different political and religious views in one community, it can be openly debated and discussed.  This is the practice of people doing things together.  With judges and hosts running these entertainment shows, debate amongst them is always evident and often targeted for screening.   Although they have different opinions on individual performances, they openly discuss their views with each other and with the performers and a debate is in action.
